Akaroa King Salmon

For forty years Akaroa King Salmon have been carefully raising the finest King Salmon in the cold pure waters of Akaroa Harbour, New Zealand - facing south to Antarctica. Akaroa King Salmon is a Māori owned partnership with local moana whenua of the harbour, Ōnuku Runanga, Ngati Porou and the founding Bates Family.

Our ethos revolves around Kaitiakitanga – which means we act as guardians of this precious place. Our founding principles require us to farm in a way that ensure our grandchildren can be proud of, which is why Akaroa King Salmon prioritise sustainable practices.

Our stocking densities are the lowest in New Zealand with 1% of fish to 99% water. We work with our feed supplier to ensure we use high quality ingredients, and formulate diets with optimal omega-6 to omega-3 ratios, whilst lowering our impact on wild fish stocks for future generations.

Sustainability

Blue Impact is a global aquafeed dedicated to sustainability and driving change in aquaculture. It centres around lowering carbon emissions, utilising more circular and restorative raw materials, and minimising ingredients derived from wild fish stocks.

Carbon Footprint

Carbon footprint is a measure of the cumulative Greenhouse Gas emissions of aquafeed, expressed in kg CO2 equivalents / kg feed.

Circular & Restorative

The percentage of circular and restorative ingredients is a measure of the level of by-products (circularity) and vegetable ingredients from regerative agriculture (restorative).

Forage Fish Dependency Ratio (FFDR)

Marine ingredients are limited resources that should be used responsibly. The FFDR is a measure of forage fish equivalents utilised to produce one unit of farmed seafood.

Our People

Akaroa Salmon is a 100% New Zealand owned partnership that includes Ngati Porou, Ōnuku Runanga (the mana moana or traditional guardians of Akaroa Harbour) and the founding Bates family. This combination gives us a holistic view across generations on how we can work with our environment and provide for our rural community.

Our legacy goes beyond the four decades of sustainable ocean-farming here that we have already achieved. Ōnuku has a long history of aquaculture in Akaroa with kaimataitai. Ngati Porou trace their history back to the arrival in Aotearoa of Maui from Hawaiki and the whale rider, Paikea.

Together this partnership principles of this whakawhanaungatanga (relationship) hold our commitment to:

  • Long term environmental sustainability — so that our mokopuna (grandchildren) can enjoy the beautiful taonga that is Akaroa Harbour.

  • An intergenerational view of development that goes beyond normal business practice.

  • Use this investment to contribute to the growth, development, and employment opportunities for Ōnuku, Ngati Porou and local communities.
