Sunflower varieties for human consumption (Helianthus annuus) were first domesticated by Native Americans in the American Southwest / Mexico approximately 5000 years ago.
Today, sunflowers are mainly grown to produce cooking oil and biodiesel while sunflower protein is considered a by-product used in animal feeds.
