Feed Ingredients
BioMar’s aquafeeds contain many of the same ingredients found in vegetarian protein shakes or the kitchen at home. See the feed ingredients below for Nordic Blu in falling order based on inclusion level.
Soy Protein
Soybeans provide high-quality protein and oils to the aquafeed industry.
-
Certified non-GMO and deforestation/conversion-free.
Soybeans are naturally protein-rich due to a symbiotic relationship with rhizobia bacteria that pulls nitrogen from the atmosphere.
Vegetable oil
Vegetable oil is used in aquafeeds as a great source of energy.
-
Canola (Brassica napus) is an oil-rich plant in the same family as cabbage, brussel sprouts and mustard
It is the third-largest source of vegetable oil in the world
Pea Starch & Protein
Peas are used as a high-quality protein and binder to improve the technical quality of the pellet.
-
Peas (Pisum sativum) are nitrogen fixing legumes that require minimal fertilizer inputs
Cultivated for at least 7000 years and grown in many parts of the world for both human consumption and stock feed
Marine Protein
Marine protein is the most complete and highly digestible protein in finfish nutrition.
-
Mostly North Atlantic herring, Sprat, and Blue whiting
100% certified sustainable according to MSC, MarinTrust, or Fishery Improvement Projects
The majority is from circular fishery by-products (fillet trimmings)
Marine Oil
Marine oils contain the essential and heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
-
Fish oil consumption dates back to Viking times in Northern Europe and was an important source of vitamin D
The fish oil is sourced from sustainable fisheries and utilizes only the by-products, such as filet trimmings
Wheat Starch & Protein
Wheat is used as a binder to improve technical pellet quality.
-
The protein fraction of wheat is highly digestible and well-suited for aquafeeds
Wheat has one of the lowest carbon footprints of any agricultural crop
Guar Protein
The protein fraction of the guar bean is an excellent ingredient due to high digestibility.
-
Guar (Cyamopsis tetragomoloba) is a nitrogen-fixing legume tolerant to drought and high temperatures
Guar is mainly a rain-fed crop that requires minimal fertilizer inputs
Krill
Krill is a natural source of pigment, which gives the salmon its characteristic pink colour.
-
Rated "A" by the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP)
Krill provides EPA and DHA as phospholipids, the preferred nutritional form of marine lipids
Microalgae
Microalgae is a highly sustainable ingredient that helps to reduce dependency on wild fish stocks.
-
AlgaPrime DHA™ is produced by cultivating the microalgae Schizochytrium sp., a primary producer of marine omega-3
The fermentation feedstock is deforestation-free and non-GM sugarcane
The AlgaPrime™ DHA production process has a low carbon, water, and land use impact
Sunflower
Sunflower oil is an excellent source of dietary energy for the fish.
-
Sunflower protein can be up-concentrated into a protein used as a fish meal alternative
Sunflowers are named because they love the sun. Provided enough, sunflowers can reach up to 5 meters in height!

FAQ
Why is this a good feed composition?
Marine finfish prefer “keto” diets comprised of high-quality protein and oils, with minimal carbohydrates. Like humans, fish need vitamins, minerals, and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA & DHA.
To lessen the impact on wild fish stocks, BioMar sources these nutrients from primarily vegetable sources, including canola, peas, beans, wheat, and sunflowers. They also use a small amount of marine ingredients to help make the feed tasty to the fish and round out the nutritional completeness of the recipe.
